Dogs enjoy making a splash

It's quite possible that the credo Watkinsville residents Nancy and Bill Akin espouse is "Let the big dog leap!"

Longtime pet lovers, the couple have embraced the sport of dock diving for two of their dogs and two years ago established a club - Dixie Dock Dogs - that draws members from Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina.

"We've had dogs since we were married, and we've had dogs all our lives," Nancy Akin said. "I saw a dock dogs competition on TV when I was flipping through the channels a few years ago and filed it in the back of my mind that this would be something interesting to try out."

In 2006, the Akins acquired a Labrador retriever to be their "boat dog" and decided to see if their pet might like to try a little diving. The couple's two diving dogs - Sally, a chocolate Lab, and Spud, a yellow Lab - compose Team 4 Dawg Flite, while two other canines - yellow Labs named Hoppy and Badger - cheer from the sidelines.

"Sally took to it right away," Nancy Akin said. "We put her on the dock, and she flew 12 feet her first time and hasn't stopped flying since. Spud would go to the edge of the dock but no farther, so we'd have to coax him and splash him a little. Now he's jumping more than 20 feet."

She added that both Sally and Spud compete in the master diver division, which means they've exceeded leaps of 20 feet.

"Sometimes a dog is just a natural, and sometimes you've got to coach them and really have a lot of patience," she said.

The Akins took their pets in 2009 to 11 competitions where Team 4 Dawg Flite won several first- and second-place awards, and they've been involved in six events this year from Louisville, Ky., to Orlando, Fla.
